Other Hotels

There are hundreds of hotels in Nice but any travel agent should be able to advise you. Most of the web-based hotel listing services and booking agencies also have extensive lists. I can't recommend a booking agency, but the most useful lists that I know of are the ones on Yahoo France (extensive but in French) and efrancehotel.com (candid descriptions, but incomplete and don't believe the rates). Most people will probably want to stay in moderately priced (modéré) 2-3 star hotels near the conference centre, although a few may prefer to stay nearer to the beach. As a very rough guide, 2 star hotels typically cost around 60-80 euros/night, 3 star around 80-160, 4 star 160-250, 5 star above 250.

Most of the luxury hotels are along the Promenade des Anglais -- next to the sea and the main shopping streets around Rue Massena, but at least 2 km (1.3 miles) south-west from the conference centre. The more moderately priced hotels are scattered all over Nice, but the main concentration is around the borders of the Rue Massena shopping area, especially in the Quatier des Musiciens behind it, leading up the hill to the train station. If you're on a very tight budget, there are 1-2 star hotels around the station starting at around 40-50 euros/night. All of these areas are tourist-oriented and very lively, especially in summer. But they tend to be noisy at night and on average they are at least 1.5 km (1 mile) from the conference centre.

There are also a few 2 star hotels south-east of the conference centre, between it and the port and behind the Château headland (06300 post codes). These are close to the conference centre (at most about 600 m) and significantly quieter, but they are still quite a long way from the main tourist areas (at least 2 km / 1.3 miles).

There are very few hotels in the Old Town, but if you want to be on the beach and 'only' 1.5 km from the conference centre, there are a few hotels on the Quai des Etats-Unis. The well-located Hotel Suisse (3 star, 140 euros) is said to be the best of these.

Alternatives

If you're travelling with a family or want a kitchen, you might be interested in taking a furnished short let apartment in a 'résidence hôtelière'. The ones that I know of in Nice are not expensive, but they are all well to the west of the town centre, hence at least 3 km from the conference centre. There are usually plenty of buses running along Promenade des Anglais, though. A reliable chain throughout France is Les Citadines (3 locations in Nice). Another one is the Astoria. Or you can look in the French yellow pages (activity = 'residence hoteliere', location = Nice, ignore any hotels in the list). Prices vary a lot, but are usually about the same as a hotel of the equivalent class. You get more space and a kitchenette, but no restaurant or room service.
